Among all countries, India has the largest burden of heart disease in children. It is estimated that 250,000 children are born annually with heart disease in India and over 95% of them do not receive timely attention. Economic challenges are the most significant barrier that comes in the way of children receiving timely care for their heart conditions. Most medical insurance providers have listed birth defects of the heart as an exception to the list of conditions covered under their scheme. Heart operations and catheter procedures in children are expensive because of the resources utilized. It is really sad to see that children with simple cardiac lesions which are amenable to life time cure after surgery are dying in our country for lack of means to undergo surgery. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics has identified birth defects of the heart as a major contributor to infant deaths in Kerala.
