Medical Camps Title

AMRITA ROTARY PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SURGERY CAMP

24/May/2017

Among all countries, India has the largest burden of heart disease in children. It is estimated that 250,000 children are born annually with heart disease in India and over 95% of them do not receive timely attention. Economic challenges are the most significant barrier that comes in the way of children receiving timely care for their heart conditions. Most medical insurance providers have listed birth defects of the heart as an exception to the list of conditions covered under their scheme. Heart operations and catheter procedures in children are expensive because of the resources utilized. It is really sad to see that children with simple cardiac lesions which are amenable to life time cure after surgery are dying in our country for lack of means to undergo surgery. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics has identified birth defects of the heart as a major contributor to infant deaths in Kerala.

Gift of Life – A Rotary international project of district 3201 and Amrita institute of Medical science Kochi have joined together in providing free heart surgery for children with congenital heart disease. Pediatric heart surgery camp planned in Nairs hospital Kollam on 25 May 2017 with support from rotary district 3202. This is the third camp organized as part of the Gift of life and Amrita hospital for providing 100 children free cardiac surgery. Rotary organization is internationally well known for humanitarian services and this project of Rotary 3201 is aimed in providing new life to at least 100 children in need for heart surgery. The pediatric heart program of Amrita institute of medical sciences Kochi which has been performing heart surgery and other procedures with results that meet the highest international standards for the last 19 years has joined Rotary for this noble cause.

The camp is for all children with proven or suspected heart problems under 18 years of age. Senior consultants in pediatric cardiology from Amrita hospital led by Dr. Balu Vaidyanathan will be present in the camp along with support staff from Amrita, Nairs hospital and Rotary. In this camp free detailed evaluation, basic investigations including echocardiography when necessary and counseling for surgery or procedures will be offered to all patients. Children from families with limited financial means will receive free cardiac surgery at Amrita hospital Kochi after assessment of their financial status.
